Italian Fine Dining in A Gala Mood
A taste of Italy was offered at the Gala Wine Dinner, which was graced by the presence of guest of honour, the Honourable Gregory So, Secretary of Commerce & Economic Development, the Government of the HKSAR.

The event was organised with Vinitaly, Italian Cuisine and Wines World Summit 2011 so the guests were treated to creations of the Summit's Star Chefs. Gastronomes also enjoyed the sessions of Sommeliers' Guide to Wine Food Pairings. A music performance and a lucky draw were other highlights of this gala evening.

Toasting Winners and Their Wines
The cocktail reception of the fair saw VIPs gather to applaud the success of both the fair and the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition, running in partnership with the prestigious London-based International Wine & Spirit Competition. More than 1,700 wines from around the world were set to be judged in the competition from 12 October to 15 October, with results announced at the cocktail reception in the evening of the first day of the fair. Click here to see the results!

Vino Sangiovese Forum
Italy has made an impact in its role as Partner Country at Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair 2011. Wine industry insiders and wine lovers were eager to learn more at the Vino Sangiovese Forum 2011. Master of Wine Patrick Farrell moderated the Forum, which explored how this Italian grape variety contributes to the excellence of many red wines, including Chianti.

Asia Top Sommelier Summit
The Third Asia Top Sommelier Summit took place at the fair this year with leading sommeliers discussing recent developments in the industry and their impact. This annual event was the perfect opportunity for sommeliers from all over the region to compare notes and to network with peers.

Hear from the Exhibitors
“This is our first participation in the fair. We are here to expand our presence in Hong Kong and work with our local agent to extend our customer network. Pasquale produces very high quality red and white wines. We are particularly keen to promote our wines to high-end restaurant operations. We’ve established some good contacts and received a lot of enquiries from Chinese mainland buyers. Our wines including Pinot Gris 2010, Pinot Noir 2009 and Riesling 2010 have won silver and bronze medals in the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition. This should help increase our market exposure.”
Chris Swannell, Marketing Manager, Pasquale Viticultura, New Zealand

“Founded in 1969, we are the biggest organisation in the world for education and training in wines and spirits. With education centres in 55 countries, we see increasing demand for our courses across the globe including Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Hong Kong has overtaken the US as our second-biggest market and the Chinese mainland is now our fifth-biggest market. That’s why we are participating in the Hong Kong fair for the first time to raise our profile here. I am very grateful of HKTDC’s support. This is a very worthwhile trip as we can meet so many people who are so keen to learn more about wines. We are working with HKTDC to explore our next step in this part of the world. We are also considering opening an office in Asia and Hong Kong is one of the preferred locations for us.”
Ian Harris, Chief Executive, Wine & Spirit Education Trust, UK

“The French pavilion gets even bigger this year and we’ve brought together 189 companies from all over France to offer a great variety of wines, spirits, champagne and cocktails here. The responses from buyers have been excellent. We’ve seen more visitors especially buyers from the Chinese mainland. The quality of buyers is really good and our exhibitors are very satisfied with the exhibition. We are expecting positive results and some exhibitors have already received orders from buyers. This fair is now an iconic event for the wine industry. We would like to see it grow and expand further.”
Anita Ma, General Manager, Sopexa Hong Kong, France

Hear from the Buyers
“Established in 1978, Metro Wine Center imports wines and spirits from different places such as Spain, Chile, Portugal and France. With two retail shops in Manila, we sell wine products through a strong network of distributors across the Philippines. This is the second year I’ve visited the fair. I am placing about US$200,000 worth of orders with two wineries from Italy. I also intend to make an order for 10,000 wine boxes from a Chinese mainland supplier. This is really a good fair with a great variety of exhibitors and wine-related activities.”
Emilio Uy, Managing Director, Metro Wine Center, the Philippines

“Our company is a wholesaler and retailer of wines and related accessories, representing more than 120 wineries worldwide. We operate 13 retail outlets in Singapore, and we are engaged in the wine-related event management for different clients. The fair is professionally run. I’ve identified two wineries from Uruguay and the US so far. We will negotiate further the pricing and look into the quality of their wines before placing orders. We may place orders for two or three containers from each of the wineries.”
Karen Ku, Senior Retail Manager, The Straits Wine Company Outlets, Singapore

Wine Storage Management Systems Certificate Presentation Ceremony
More and more wine investors in Asia would like to store their wines in, or closer to, their home country. The Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency addresses this need with their Wine Storage Management Systems Certification Scheme. This is the third occasion at which certificates have been presented but it was the first time that the Agency used the international stage of this fair for the Certificate Presentation Ceremony.

Cocktail Demonstration
Cocktail demonstration sessions were introduced at the Fair, with exhibitors showing us how to mix various popular and specialised cocktails.
