| Sensational Culinary Journey Through the Sweet Sounds of Fado |
The theme of the Gala Wine Dinner was "Fado Wine Night". Fado is sometimes described as the soul of Portugal. The sweet, yearning tones of these songs, accompanied by guitar or mandolin, evoke all the beauty of the country. Fado also means ‘fate’ in Portuguese and it was certainly the fate of Partner Country of the fair, Portugal, to enjoy a sweet success. The Honarable John Tsang Chun-wah, GBM, JP, Financial Secretary, the Government of the HKSAR (second from left), Margaret Fong, Executive Director, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (second from right). Nuno Vale, Marketing Director, Vini Portugal (first from left) and Vitor Sereno, Consul General, Consulate General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong (first from right), graced the occasion and star chef Martinho Moniz created a magnificent menu for the gala dinner.

“Attwood is the largest premium wine distributor in Cambodia representing many international brands of wine, spirit, beer and champagne including Hennessy and Johnnie Walker. We are part of Attwood Investment Group, a conglomerate with a diversified business portfolio comprising restaurants, property and container terminals. This is the third year we’ve visited Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. We bought some good wines in the past two years. The results are also encouraging this year with business concluded with three wineries from Italy and Portugal. We’ve placed orders for 600 bottles of red wine and 300 bottles of sweet wine from two Italian wineries separately, plus 600 bottles of Port wine from the Portuguese exhibitor. This is a good show and we are able to find something good each year.”
Lity Yap, Senior Advisor to Chairman, Attwood Import Export Co Ltd, Cambodia |
“In business for seven years, Zhuhai Gaobo is a wine importer, distributor and wholesaler based in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai. Our wines are sourced from different places including France and Spain while we are particularly strong in the sale of Portuguese wines. As Portugal is the Partner Country of this year’s Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair, we’ve found a lot of quality Portuguese wines on offer. We are now in talks with about five new contacts to enrich our wine offerings. One of them is a Hong Kong-based company who distribute the niche Medeira wine from Portugal and we are interested in placing an order for 100 cases. There’re many choices at the fair. We’ve also found several new suppliers from Italy for Moscato wine and Amarone red wine made from the partially dried grapes. We will definitely conclude some deals soon. This is an excellent fair. I can find good and exciting offers every year.”
Chen Hehua, General Manager, Zhuhai Gaobo Trading Co., Ltd., Chinese mainland |
“In business for 40 years, Yotsuya is a wine importer and retailer based in Yokohama. In addition to the operation of three retail shops, we are engaged in the supermarket and restaurant businesses. At present, we import and sell wines mainly from France, Italy and Chile. I am visiting Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair for the first time to source new wines from different places. I am particularly interested in Australian wines. So far, I’ve identified four wineries from Australia at the fair for red wine, white wine and sparkling wine. Discussions are also underway with a Portuguese exhibitor for red wine. We spend up to about US$500,000 for wine sourcing every year. This visit has proved to be very rewarding. Successful negotiations will generate orders that may fulfil as much as 30 per cent of our procurement needs per annum. This is a good fair allowing me to meet with some niche wineries that produce good quality wines. I really enjoy the visit.”
Shinichi Sakata, CEO, Yotsuya Co., Ltd, Japan |
“Mag Dystrybucja is one of the biggest distributors of beverages and alcoholic products in Poland with an annual turnover of about EUR200 million. We distribute a great variety of wines from Spain, Italy and Portugal mainly. This is my first visit to Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair to source wines and related accessories. In the first day of the fair, I’ve found three potential suppliers from the Chinese mainland and Korea for wine accessories like baggage tags and wine openers with a futuristic design. These accessories can be appealing gifts we give away to customers buying wines from us. I will spend up to EUR50,000 to buy wine accessories here. I am also in talks with an Italian exhibitor for red wine and white wine, and with a UK exhibitor for gin. The amount of wine orders will be subject to further negotiation. I will meet some suppliers of Australian and Chilean wines today for more opportunities. This is an exciting fair offering so much to see and buy. I will return next year.”
Wojciech Sliwinski, Wine Sales Director, Mag Dystrybucja, Poland |
Asia Euro is a distributor of wines and spirits representing a wide portfolio of international brands. We are especially strong in the sale of whisky products from Scotland as well as Canada, Ireland and Spain. We’ve seen a rising demand for good quality whisky in recent years, which sets a new trend for wine consumption. This is our fifth-year participation in Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair to reach out to more customers. One of the exhibition highlights is the single malt whisky products from Scotland including the 200th anniversary edition whisky of the Laphroaig brand. We are pleased to be here meeting both new and existing customers. We’ve met quite a number of buyers from Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese mainland in particular. This fair is a solid platform to promote products and enhance exchanges with clients. Some buyers will even place orders on the spot. That’s why we would like to exhibit here.”
Florence Luk, Marketing Manager, Asia Euro Wines & Spirits (HK) Ltd, Hong Kong |
“Wine lovers in Asia are paying a lot of attention to quality wines from Europe and it’s always a challenge for us to make Spanish wines better known in this part of the world. Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair serves as a fantastic platform to promote the great variety of Spanish wines and explore business opportunities in the Chinese mainland and Asia Pacific region. We’ve seen a continuous increase in the number of Spanish wine companies coming here for business expansion. This year, ICEX Spain Trade and Investment has brought together more than 60 wine companies from Spain to showcase the rich variety and superior quality of Spanish wines. The exhibition has achieved encouraging results over the years and we’re happy to see buyers’ strong interest in our wines. This is certainly the most important trade fair in Asia to expand further the export of Spanish wines.”
Maria Pérez-Ribes, Deputy Consul General and Commissioner for Economic & Commercial Affairs, Consulate General of Spain (Trade Commission), Spain |
“Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair is a well-known gateway for penetrating the Chinese mainland and Asian markets. That’s why so many wine companies from Italy like to come here to do business. A total of 222 Italian wineries have gathered here this year, making it the biggest-ever Italian pavilion for the Hong Kong fair and showcasing a full range of wines from different parts of Italy. There’s so much to learn about Italian wines. There are some 175,000 wineries in Italy and more than 540 grape varietals. Italian wines are the most popular wines in the USA market. This fair brings together so many Italian wine companies here, creating a critical mass to promote our wines with the Italian style to customers in Hong Kong and the rest of Asia. We’ve drawn a lot of attention and our wine tasting rooms have been full all the time. The extension of customs facilitation measures for wine entering China to more mainland ports will provide a fast track for business expansion. This will attract more Italian wineries to come to Hong Kong for business expansion into the Chinese mainland.”
Stevie Kim, Managing Director, Vinitaly International, Italy

"The Japanese pavilion is making a strong presence at the fair again. A total of 26 wineries, six wine companies and two industry associations have joined us for this year’s exhibition to promote various products from sake and shochu to Japanese whisky and fruit liquors. A special highlight is our wineries from Yamanashi prefecture showcasing the unique white wine made from a special grape type called Koshu. A section of the pavilion is also dedicated for an impressive display of sake cups in different sizes, shapes and styles that will match the enjoyment of sake varieties. The buyers’ response has been excellent. The amount of business concluded by our exhibitors in the first day of exhibition has already tripled last year’s results. We’re very glad to learn about such a success. We would like to extend our gratitude to HKTDC’s support. This fair creates a crucial trading platform for us to expand our presence throughout Asia.”
Ryoichi Ito, Director General, JETRO Hong Kong, Japan External Trade Organization, Japan |
“This is the third year we’ve participated in Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. We’re very pleased to be here again taking up a larger exhibition space to promote our brand. Rastignac is a Cognac brand of Chateau des Plassons vineyard with a history of 500 years. This fair has successfully increased consumers’ awareness about our brand and facilitated our expansion into the Chinese mainland market. Rastignac is providing a wide range of Cognac products catering to the needs of different consumers and we see strong potential for business growth in the Chinese mainland. We are investing a lot of resources in this fair for brand promotion and the results have been terrific. We secured some new customers and orders last year. We’ve received strong interest again this year and the traffic of visitors has been good. Negotiations are now underway with about 10 new customers from the Chinese mainland for potential orders. We look forward to concluding business with them soon.”
Ricky Lee, General Manager (Greater China), Rastignac (HK) Limited, Hong Kong

“Bettane+Desseauve and Sopexa have joined hands to organize a strong pavilion for French wines again this year. Altogether, more than 120 wineries and companies representing different wine-growing regions from France are here exploring new business opportunities. This fair has attracted many buyers from different places and we see a rising number of individual wine lovers and private collectors visiting the exhibition. Consumers in this part of the world are getting more and more knowledgeable about wines and looking for good quality products. and this is an encouraging trend. We’ve met with many potential customers from different markets such as Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. Our participating wineries are very happy with the show and some of them have already concluded sales with buyers. The organizer has done an excellent job, ensuring that things are efficiently done here. This is really the right place to promote our branding and wine products.”
Michel Bettane, Chairman, Bettane+Desseauve, France

“Major Cellar has been participating in Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair for many years. It has successfully enhanced our branding and business development. We specialize in the distribution of fine wines mainly from France, USA and Italy. Our portfolio also includes premium whisky from Scotland and Japan. We’ve seen another exciting exhibition this year. This is a good meeting place to reinforce relationships with existing customers and identify new buyers. This year, we’ve met some new clients from Qingdao and Dalian in northeast China as well as Sichuan province in the western region of the mainland. A number of Hong Kong visitors including restaurant groups, business corporations and even wine collectors have also approached us and expressed interest in our wines. We’ve already got some orders confirmed by both new and existing customers. This is the most important trade fair in Hong Kong for the wine industry and also the most effective platform to secure new buyers.”
