| Hong Kong’s Advantages as Wine Trading Hub for Asia – New Facilitation Measures For Wine Re-export Into The Mainland |
Since the removal of all duty-related customs and administrative controls in February 2008, Hong Kong has further developed into a wine trading and distribution centre for the region, particularly the Chinese mainland.
In September 2014, Hong Kong's Customs and Excise Department and the General Administration of Customs of the Mainland signed a supplement to the "Co-operation Arrangement on Customs Facilitation Measures for Wine Entering the Mainland through Hong Kong" to enhance the facilitation measures. The supplement waived the requirement for wine consignments from Hong Kong have to be received by the Mainland Registered Wine Importers. Also the use of a newly developed web-based system for declaration of wine consignment information to the Mainland Customs is mandatory. Immediate Customs clearance would be provided to those wine consignments arriving at designated Mainland ports in Shenzhen and Guangzhou under the new arrangement.
Hong Kong is an excellent springboard for wine traders to enter into the mainland market. In the first nine months of 2014, Hong Kong's total exports of wine increased by 59.8% year-on-year to HKD933 millon. |

“Currently, we source red wines and white wines for our French restaurant and our wine bar in Cambodia through a Hong Kong trading company. This is our first visit to the Hong Kong fair. We are particularly looking for red wines, sparkling wines and whisky. So far, we have found two potential suppliers from France and Italy for the supply of red wines and sparkling wines. We’ll place orders after receiving quotations from these suppliers. The Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair is a good show which provides a good opportunity for us to meet with different wine companies from all over the world. We can see a lot of brands which are not available in Cambodia. It is an important fair for our business development as we just started to develop our wholesale business. We’ll visit the fair again next year.” Ly Kunthai, Owner, Red Wine House & Café, Cambodia
“Established in 2010, Equatorial Wines is a wine importer, wholesaler and distributor which supplies to hotels and restaurants in Singapore. This is the first time I have visited the Hong Kong fair. I am looking for boutique wines from Australia, South Africa and South America. I am particularly interested in two Australian wineries and hope to become their exclusive distributor in Singapore after further negotiations. It is interesting to see the dynamics of the Hong Kong fair. Different wine-producing countries and regions are well represented. The varieties here are more diverse than the wine fair in Singapore. I’ll visit the Hong Kong fair again next year.”
Mike Back, Director, Equatorial Wines Pte Ld, Singapore

“Australia In Vines Association is dedicated to promoting Australian wine culture into different communities. Sponsored by Sunshine Creek, our pavilion showcases red wines, white wines and sparkling wines offered by 30 wineries from different parts of Australia, of which 16 wineries come from the Yarra Valley. This year we have made greater efforts to promote Sunshine Creek and the Yarra Valley so that international buyers know more about our Australian wines. As Hong Kong is an international wine trading hub, the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair provides a good channel for us to explore the Asian market especially the Chinese mainland market. At this year’s fair, our exhibitors have met a lot of buyers from the Chinese mainland.”
Eddy K.T. Chiu, Chief Executive, Australia In Vines Association, Australia
“This is our second participation in the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. We have come with seven well-known wineries from Sichuan Province on the Chinese mainland to showcase more than 30 types of baijiu (white liquor). Our main objectives of organising this group pavilion are to promote Sichuan’s baijiu to international buyers and let them appreciate our baijiu. This fair is an international event which provides a good platform for our wineries to meet with wine traders, buyers and producers and to explore new business and cooperation opportunities. Buyer traffic is heavier than last year. Business atmosphere has been very good.”
Chen Lixiang, Vice Counsel, Economy & Information Commission of Sichuan Province, the Chinese mainland
